Florence Crittenton Family Development Program (continued)
- The Marine Avenue residential center on
the former Charleston Naval Base serves single mothers who lack safe,
secure housing while they are completing their education and career
training. Residents must be 18 or older with one child, be motivated
and have defined career goals. Residents may stay up to two years and
contribute a percentage of their income to housing costs.
Supportive services include individual counseling, parenting and child
development, health education, budgeting and household management.
Take Charge, an independent living curriculum
offered to adolescents about to age out of protective custody, was
developed at the request of the Department of Social Services Foster Care
Division. This intensive curriculum focuses on the issues and skills
necessary for the successful transition from protective custody to
financial and emotional independence. The purpose of this program is to
provide an understanding of personal choices and the responsibility of
decision making as well as the practical aspects of living independently.
The Nunan Street Project is a collaborative
venture with the Humanities Foundation and the Volunteers of America to
provide affordable housing to single-parent families and serves as a
cornerstone effort to reclaim the Nunan Street neighborhood. Crittenton
has extended the supportive services already offered at Marine Avenue to ten of
the families at Nunan Street. Occupancy began March, 1999.
